With the rapid increase in population in different parts of the world, there is a higher demand for food production and processing. Food processing industry has gained much prominence recently because of the increase in demand for processed food. Since the industry is highly competitive, it is necessary to be efficient in operational processes. Here, the challenges are quite different from other industries because there is higher emphasis on maintaining the standards of hygiene and quality. Best practices, higher grade ingredients and right machinery are very important to maintain quality in production. While the quality of ingredients determines the taste of the food produced, proper machinery helps in processing and preserving it. Among manufacturing equipment, industrial centrifugal fans and blowers play a major role in several operations. From general ventilation to material transportation, dust collection, drying, cooling & storage, these fans are widely employed across several applications.

Today, India is one among the top countries in industrial manufacturing with a major growth in sectors like automobiles, steel manufacturing, cement, textile, metal and mining etc. Though manufacturing contributes to only small portion of India’s GDP compared to other sectors, the growth is continuous and remained positive in the recent years. Some potential reasons for the growth remaining positive are the establishment of new industries & factories, expansion of the existing manufacturing units with improved infrastructure and promotion of advanced practices in manufacturing. To improve productivity, today Indian manufacturers are coming up with better practices in system design and new approaches in production processes. This in fact has led to increase in demand for airflow requirements and thermal comfort inside production facilities.

Lack of ventilation, machinery producing extra heat, hazardous particulates, fumes & vapors from the processes and several other things can make an industrial setting uncomfortable for workers. As a way to prevent this situation and create ambience in working environment, today many industries are focusing on installing good fan equipment inside their structures. Fans in industrial settings serve several roles, not only in the air cleaning and conditioning, but in other processes like combustion, exhaust systems, conveying, cooling and drying etc. They serve different airflow requirements for different purposes in industries.

Process Fans in Iron and Steel Industry

Steel in industries is manufactured in two ways, traditionally by using raw materials like iron ore, coal and limestone in blast furnace or by recycling the material using electric arc furnaces. The first process involves making of molten iron using the raw materials iron ore, coke (pure form of carbon obtained by heating and driving off impurities of coal) and lime in blast furnace. Then it is further followed by combining varying amounts of steel scrap with molten iron in Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOS). The second method requires no raw materials and reuses the existing steel scrap to produce steel in an Electric arc furnace. Both these production processes require several centrifugal fans for drying & heating ore pellets, handling the undersized dust particles, removing and cleaning waste gases, providing combustion air to burn coke, exhausting waste by-products, cooling the product to remove heat etc.

Industries have unique dust collecting requirements in their production, manufacturing or industrial facilities to reduce pollution, keep the work environment clean and increase safer working conditions for workers. Different industrial processes produce different sized dust particulates, some stay on the ground while others remain suspended in the air. The typical de-dusting mechanism includes a fan system that pushes or pulls the dirty air through filtration process. Based on the type of dust the industrial process produce, different fan equipment is used to accomplish different dust collecting tasks. Centrifugal fans are capable of handling high volume of dust loads, and hence they are widely used in industrial processes for removing dust.

Process Fans in Fertilizer Industry

Fertilizer plants typically require several industrial fans and blowers in its production process. These industrial centrifugal fans should have distinguished capabilities to handle various material types and ensure reliable ventilation. Mainly they should be corrosive resistant because the process includes many chemical materials at different concentrations and mixtures. Most of the modern synthetic fertilizers contain nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium as primary compounds with secondary nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and sulphur added to them to supply essential nutrients required for plant growth.

Centrifugal Fans: What’s in a Name?

You would have come across many fans like Pressure Blower, FD fans, ID fans, Raw Mill fans, Flue Gas Recirculation Fans etc. They are all technically centrifugal fans having different names and serving different purpose in the industry. 

Centrifugal fans displace air radially, thus diverting the direction of air by 90 degree. At a constant speed of fan, centrifugal fan will move constant volume of air and not constant mass of air. Hence it is called as constant volume fan. This can be achieved from centrifugal fans with different construction and design.

Depending on the industrial requirements of airflow rate, volume, and pressure centrifugal fans have been customised to serve industry. Centrifugal fans are named as per the function served by them. They are often referred with different names based on the industrial process they support. While the technical functionality of these fans is same, the design element is changed to support several industrial processes.

An Industrial building is often a closed building. We want an environment inside the building to be comfortable. There are various types of industrial processes going inside the industrial building. These different processes can make the temperature inside the building higher. This extra heat has to be vented out of the building using an external equipments like fans, louvres, gravity vents, heaters.
